Learning Comes Before Teaching!

The Case for
Global Competence

Birth is the most "local" moment of our lifetimes. From there, our circles widen and others enter our lives. Life is about navigating this change over time.

Before the Industrial Revolution, success for most people depended on understaning the community within miles of their homes.  In the 21st century, an average American will change careers between 3-7 timesAs our economy globalizes, survival depends on resilence and the ability to navigate culture and view points that are different from our own. Many of us live in areas we never dreamed possible.

GLOBAL COMPETENCE leads us to big picture thinking and makes us better teachers

  • Learning about the world offers the chance to broaden our knowledge and skills.

  • Perspective Taking deepens our understanding of what's possible.

  • Communicating with people outside our "silos" can prevent errors in thinking and introduce new solutions to historical problems.

  • The result can be meaningful collective action that supports sustainable life for all.
